Premier League team of the season so far in 2024/25
Liverpool are top of the Premier League and have two players in the Premier League XI of the season so far.
This is based on WhoScored ratings and at this stage, every player must have started at least eight Premier League games.
GOALKEEPER: Mark Flekken (Brentford)
Brentford have had a more-than-decent start to their Premier League season but have somehow conceded the most shots on target, so Flekken has made the most saves. It’s not a foolproof algorithm.
RIGHT-BACK: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Usurps Pedro Porro after he made a ludicrous nine tackles in the 2-1 win over Brighton in which he went head to head with Kaoru Mitoma. He also creates more chances than any other Premier League right-back.
CENTRE-BACK: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
He’s back to something approaching his best, which is apparently worse than Davinson Sanchez. He was predictably excellent v Crystal Palace and Chelsea before scoring against Arsenal. And kept another clean sheet v Aston Villa as the Reds went five points clear.
CENTRE-BACK: Cristian Romero (Tottenham)
His busyness creates a high score; Romero is a defender who is very involved in Tottenham’s play. There are tackles, there are attempts on goal, there has actually been a largely competent Spurs defence.
LEFT-BACK: Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City)
Three Premier League goals for Gvardiol make him a) Manchester City’s joint-second highest scorer this season and b) easily the highest-scoring left-back in a shallow field.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Moises Caicedo (Chelsea)
Quietly having a brilliant season in that Chelsea midfield, he logged four tackles and six interceptions in the victory over Newcastle United. And then scored his first goal of the campaign against Manchester United. Nobody mentions that fee anymore.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa)
A third assist of the season came against Fulham, while he is making tackles at the same rate as Amadou Onana.
RIGHT WING: Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
An assist in each of the first five Premier League games of the season, before setting up the Ndidi own goal with another inch-perfect corner delivery. He then claimed two more assists – and a second goal of the season – v Southampton. The player of the season so far? He was certainly missed v Bournemouth. And returned with another goal v Liverpool. He was kept very quiet v Chelsea but his defensive work this season keeps him inches ahead of Mo Salah in this team.
ATTACKING MIDFIELD: Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
A stupidly good player long before he decided to score four goals in one half against Brighton. He then claimed his fifth assist of the season in a daft game v Nottingham Forest. Scored his seventh v Newcastle United.
LEFT WING: Son Heung-Min (Tottenham)
Claimed a third assist of the season v Aston Villa to keep out Luis Diaz. He also keeps the ball incredibly well for an attacking player.
STRIKER: Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Twelve goals in 11 games. His statistics continue to be utterly ludicrous.
